In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TEDx consists of a series of local, independent events united in the goal of bringing people together in sharing a TED-like experience.
TED is a nonprofit organization founded in California 30 years ago that holds annual conferences where the world's leading exponents of "thinking" and "doing" expound their ideas in an 18-minute talk. Speakers who have spoken at TED conferences include Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Also at a TEDx event, whose x stands for the nature of an "independently organized TED event," there will be live talks lasting up to 18 minutes and screenings of pre-recorded TED talks, with a view to sparking dialogue and encouraging discussion among the audience in the room.
