A stroll through Ferrara can turn into a real plunge into history. Not surprisingly, as the "city of the Renaissance," it has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status.
And what better occasion to be enchanted by Europe's first modern city than the reopening of Palazzo dei Diamanti? One of Italy's most original monuments, with more than 8,500 stone diamonds covering its facade, and for years the venue for artistic events of international resonance, the palace inaugurates a new season by hosting the exhibition "Renaissance in Ferrara. Ercole de' Roberti and Lorenzo Costa". And it does so in grand style, after major restoration and expansion works that have enhanced its spaces without distorting the balanced original structure.
With the fascinating narration of local guides, you will appreciate the exhibition itinerary consisting of more than 100 masterpieces, including several loans of works that have rarely left their museums and will be exhibited in Italy for the first time.
*SPOILER A special surprise will make your visit unique and unforgettable on this first weekend of March: you will be able to watch an extraordinary videomapping, an unprecedented light and music show that will grace the facades of the Palace, imprinting itself in the eyes and memory of all viewers.
Another appointment on our itinerary will be with one of the most beloved and, at the same time, controversial female figures of the Ferrara Renaissance, the unforgettable Lucrezia Borgia, who will come back to life during an enthralling animated visit in the rooms of Casa Romei. The actors of teatrOrtaet embody the duchess and the key characters who determined her events, in a suggestive historical evocation that has as background one of the rare still existing examples of a noble residence, with its typically medieval elements alongside other fully Renaissance ones.
And off we go, pedaling like authentic Ferrara citizens along what has been called the most beautiful street in Europe: Corso Ercole I d'Este, an avenue enveloped in a silent stillness that immediately transports you back in time.
From here, it is easy to reach the city walls, which are undoubtedly worth a snippet of your time: you cannot leave Ferrara without having traveled, on foot or on your bicycle, at least a small piece of the 9 km of city walls that for centuries have guarded the historic center, among bastions, towers and relaxing landscapes with many perspectives.
