The Quartiere Giardino

The Quartiere Giardino (literally Garden District) is the neighborhood you will find to welcome you if you arrive in Ferrara by train. It is a neighborhood with a strong twentieth-century feel: here you will find some of the city's must-see spots such as the Acquedotto Monumentale, the MEIS (National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah) and the Darsena di San Paolo.

If you're interested in discovering the Ferrara of the 1900s, you can't help but cross it!

Quartiere Giardino - Historical Background

The Quartiere Giardino was born where the imposing papal finery once stood: a star-shaped fortress located near the southwest wall. The fortress was built to reaffirm the sovereignty of the Papal States, which returned to full possession of the city in the late 1500s.

The district undertook a process of redevelopment in the early 20th century in which some important figures in rationalist architecture such as architect Ciro Contini and the Savonuzzi brothers intervened.

In this early intervention, the municipal stadium, elementary schools, the Aqueduct reservoir with the monumental fountain dedicated to the Po River, the fire station and other public housing were built.

However, the neighborhood was bombed during World War II, stopping its construction, which resumed after the war.

Quartiere Giardino- The current redevelopment

The neighborhood is currently at the center of a redevelopment process that aims to increase green spaces, emphasizing with ecological corridors the connection between the historic city center and the dock on the Po di Volano River.
