In Ferrara, the Palio is a must! You absolutely cannot miss the opportunity to experience a real Renaissance trip by admiring the historical costumes and competitions. But in Ferrara, the Palio takes place in May, so what can you do if you are visiting Ferrara at any other time of the year?

First of all, do not despair: throughout the year you can see the figurants strolling around the city as they rehearse for some special occasion or train to take part in the flag races and other competitions.

But if you really want to experience the atmosphere of the 'contrade', in this article we point out the main events they organise throughout the year.

8-25 June
Giostra del Borgo - Borgo San Luca

An authentic leap into the past that will allow you to discover and enjoy life in a real armed camp while enjoying theatre and music performances. Among the firework shows and informative moments, the palate will also find its place: a real Hostaria will be open in the garden of the structure every day from 7.30 pm. And more: also starting at the same time, those who wish to do so will be able to taste traditional Ferrara dishes in the majestic setting of the Castle-Restaurant.

Summer Evenings - Borgo San Giovanni

The evenings of the Borgo San Giovanni contrada represent a true festival at the gates of the city of Ferrara.
The contrada opens its doors to host an event where good music is combined with the good food of traditional Ferrara dishes.

Traditionally organised on two occasions a year - in summer and in winter - the contrada 'evenings' are an unmissable event for those who want to experience the warm embrace of a contrada!

Bavarian FEst - Borgo San Giorgio

An occasion to rediscover and share the Bavarian tradition of good food and good beer to celebrate and confirm the twinning with the town of Kaufbeuren in Germany. Four days to enjoy the goodness of beer and typical German food in the heart of the district that corresponds to the town's first inhabited centre.

Where the ancient Castel Tedaldo once stood, in the heart of the papal fortress near Viale IV Novembre, the Giostra del Monaco takes place: a not-to-be-missed event with the Contrada San Giacomo that will land you straight in the Middle Ages. A unique way to relive history in the picturesque setting of the city walls. A real medieval encampment, with settings of daily life, gunfights, bow and crossbow tournaments... and lots of good food!

Acido Acida - Rione Santo Spirito

A festival to pay homage to 'British' style beer organised in collaboration with 'Il Molo - British Pub' in Ferrara and taste the characteristic 'sour' or acid beers.
The Festival - which reaches its 10th edition in 2023 - hosts 40 breweries that will bring a great selection of beers to delight your senses.

Discover tradition with the unicorn tavern and its cappellacci! It sounds like a fairy tale, but instead it is a real place: this is the Osteria della Contrada di Santa Maria in Vado where you can enjoy excellent cappellacci during every weekend in October, the yellow-purple venue will be ready to welcome you in the magnificent setting of which they are guardians.
