Ferrara boasts an intimate historic centre, enclosed by 9 kilometres of restored historic walls and about 13 kilometres of submura, where bastions, towers and gates bear witness to the city's ancient defensive system. Together with the Bassani Urban Park, this green embrace of pedestrian and cycle paths constitutes the city's natural lung. In Ferrara, the call for slow tourism is strong and spending a day cycling or boating on the Po becomes an experience not to be missed.

In 1995, the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, with the recognition of the Historic Centre, a recognition that in 1999 was also extended to the Po Delta area and the Delizie Estensi, splendid residences that dotted the countryside and where the Este family, dukes of the city, loved to spend their time among games, banquets and entertainment.
