This year the Este Carnival pays tribute to one of the most influential women of the Este family: Isabella d'Este Gonzaga. A rich programme runs from 10 to 11 February to celebrate this historic carnival and discover 'The Lives of Isabella d'Este Gonzaga'.
Due to bad weather, the event scheduled for February 11 has been postponed to February 25.
Isabella d'Este a great patron of the arts
The eldest daughter of Eleonora d'Aragona and Ercole I d'Este, the Duke to whom we owe the great Renaissance enlargement project of the city (also known as the Addizione Erculea), she was an iconic woman for her time. A patron of the arts but above all a fashion leader: her innovative style of dress was copied by numerous noblewomen and created a real trend among the courts.
So great was her fame that she was portrayed by the greatest artists of the period including Leonardo and Titian: some even claim that Isabella d'Este may be the only plausible alternative to Lisa Gherardini in the Mona Lisa.
Este Carnival: The programme
Between processions and performances dedicated to the figure of Isabella d'Este de Gonzaga, it will be an opportunity to admire the three girls who will portray Isabella as a child, Isabella as a bride, and Isabella as a marchioness. The procession will be composed of more than 100 participants who will wear the beautiful and famous Renaissance costumes of the Este family, and the procession will adhere to the tradition passed down by the Dukes of Este.
The Carnival events of the Este family scheduled for February 25 will begin at 4:00 PM, with the procession and performances of the Este Carnival, through the streets of the historic center.
