Parco Urbano Giorgio Bassani
This urban park is the city's green lung, a wonderful natural area of no less than 1200 hectares just outside the city walls – between the city and the Po River. If you thought Central Park was big, Ferrara's urban park is much bigger! A great place for outdoor sports and long walks, surrounded by lush nature.
Parco Urbano's history
The Giorgio Bassani Urban Park stands where the hunting reserve of the Este family once stood, attached to the Delizia di Belfiore. Besides being an area devoted to recreation and entertainment, it was a strategic area for the extension of the defensive system of the walls to the Po River.
Over the centuries the area was never built on and, along with the city wall apparatus, it fell into disuse and reached a state of total abandonment after the war. It was thanks to the intervention of Italia Nostra and a number of private citizens, including the well-known writer Giorgio Bassani and the lawyer Paolo Ravenna, that in the 1970s a massive redevelopment process got under way and these spaces were claimed back. This project has gone down in history as Addizione Verde, a reference back to the historic intervention of the Addizione Erculea in the 15th century,
This is a wonderful park where you can spend a few hours for a picnic or participate in one of the many events organized there throughout the year. If you don’t want to miss them, check our agenda!
