The Countryside Whitin the Walls
Looking at the map of Ferrara, you will notice how rich the city is in green spaces, and you will probably be surprised to find, to the northeast, a very large continuous green area. What could it be? A park? A private garden? Well, in Ferrara we have a little piece of "countryside” within our walls – a peaceful corner that stretches to the north of Ferrara with its fields, vegetable gardens and parks for about 4 hectares.
Placed between the Jewish Cemetery and the Monumental Charterhouse, this area is managed by associations and farms committed to adopting cultivation techniques that minimize environmental impact while preserving biodiversity. It is the ideal space for a stop or picnic during your Ferrara days.
You can reach the Campagna dentro le Mura via bicycle or pedestrian paths connecting with the city walls. If you are coming from the centre, on the other hand, you can easily take the road from Piazza Ariostea that will lead you straight to this magnificent green space.
Definitely an uncommon experience to find real countryside inside the city – do not miss the chance to see it with your own eyes!
Historical Notes
Biagio Rossetti designed this area as part of his innovative urban renewal plan, the so-called Addizione Erculea. It was a modern and innovative project that made Ferrara the first modern city in Europe, equipped with an ante-litteram town plan. The idea behind this space was to provide the city with an inland agricultural supply area, so as to make it self-sufficient and autonomous should the need arise.
Over the centuries the area has been maintained as it was intended, and in 1987 the municipality purchased it, ensuring its continued protection.
