The Sixteenth Century in Ferrara: Mazzolino, Ortolano, Garofalo, Dosso
October 12, 2024 - February 16, 2025 - Ferrara, Palazzo dei Diamanti
From October 12, 2024, to February 16, 2025, the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara will host "The Sixteenth Century in Ferrara: Mazzolino, Ortolano, Garofalo, Dosso," a captivating journey through the Renaissance.
This exhibition marks the second phase of the "Renaissance in Ferrara. 1471-1598 from Borso to Alfonso II d’Este" series, highlighting the era from when Ferrara was elevated to a duchy until it came under direct Papal control. The early sixteenth century, transitioning from Ercole I d’Este to his son Alfonso, was a period of artistic generational change, marked by the passing of key figures such as Cosmè Tura and Francesco del Cossa.
Featuring works by Ludovico Mazzolino, Giovan Battista Benvenuti known as Ortolano, Benvenuto Tisi known as Garofalo, and Giovanni Luteri known as Dosso, artists who redefined the artistic scene in Ferrara during the early sixteenth century. The exhibition offers a deep dive into the cultural richness and sophisticated aesthetics of a defining era for Ferrara.
A unique opportunity to immerse yourself in sixteenth-century Ferrara, where the sacred and profane, the mythological and the everyday converge in works of extraordinary beauty.

Ferrara Arte - The Foundation
In Ferrara, important art events mean Ferrara Arte, a foundation established with the aim of holding international exhibitions in the splendid setting of the Palazzo dei Diamanti in collaboration with the Art Museums Service of the Municipality of Ferrara.
The foundation's first initiative dates back to 1991-92 when, together with the Musée Marmottan, an anthological exhibition of Giovanni Boldini was organised in Paris, followed in Ferrara by the exhibition 'Claude Monet and his friends'.
Over the years, Ferrara Arte has forged a valuable network of connections and collaborations with the world's greatest museums - from the Metropolitan in New York to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, from the Museo del Prado to the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, from the Tate in London to the Bozar in Brussels and the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart - making the Palazzo dei Diamanti one of the best known and most respected excellences abroad.
Alongside the exhibitions organised at the historic building located in the so-called Quadrivio degli Angeli, Ferrara Arte has distinguished itself for initiatives aimed at enhancing the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of the city and its province, and in recent years has employed its professionalism to design and realise exhibition projects in different city spaces, including the Castello Estense, Palazzina Marfisa d'Este, Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea and Palazzo Bonacossi.
